Sphaerophoria-System
Sphaerophoria rueppellii
The hoverfly Sphaerophoria rueppellii is a new ally in aphid control. This endemic hoverfly is active over a very wide temperature range (10°C-40°C). Adults of S. rueppellii have a great search capacity allowing them to lay eggs directly into aphid infestations, even of small size. Each female can lay up to 400 eggs. While adults feed on pollen and nectar, the larvae are great predators attacking main aphid species. One S. rueppellii larva consumes an average of 200 aphids during its development (9 days at 25°C) and can also feed on other pests such as whiteflies, thrips, and spider mites.
