Orius laevigatus
The minute pirate bug Orius laevigatus is a voracious beneficial insect against thrips. Adults eat all mobile thrips stages, while nymphs prefer thrips larvae. Orius bugs also devour other prey such as aphids, spider mites, whiteflies or moth eggs. They sometimes kill more prey than strictly necessary for their own feeding. Moreover, Orius also eat pollen, which enables them to build up a population in pollen bearing crops without the presence of thrips.
Orius is used in a wide range of crops to control thrips, especially in pollen bearing crops such as sweet pepper. In order to optimize control of thrips, a combined release with predatory mites, is the best strategy.
