Crude perlite is a volcanic stone found at many locations throughout the world and formed during volcanic eruptions caused by vaporization of the bonded water enclosed the rock. As a result of the vaporization the perlite expands to about 20 times its original volume. In horticulture perlite is used as additive to potting soil mixtures, while it creates air and can absorb a lot of water. Perlite is used as pure growing media as well.
