Mechanical harvesting of spring onions can be done entirely with the developed harvester. The single-row machine has a capacity of about 50,000 plants per hour. Fetching, cutting to a length and cutting off the roots ensure that the onions are laid almost clean from the soil into the crate.
Small sowing of onions with endives of up to 60 mm are also harvested with the machine. The onions are damaged less than onions harvested with the hand due to the soft clamps. The machine has been developed in collaboration with a contracting firm and growers.
The frame of the machine is made entirely of painted steel. The machine is made as per the requirements imposed by the ARBO [Dutch Safety, Health & Welfare Service Act], ISO 900 and EC.
