Description

Granat is a cabbage variety that produces long, slim and closed heads. Its currugated leaves develop from the roots and grow together forming a loose conical or oval head with 50 to 60 cm in length. It is completely missing the typical stalk that cabbage usually has. The biennial plant is cultivated in Europe only annual. Natural location: Chines cabbage has already been cultivated in China since the 5th century. Towards the end of the 19th century it spread to Europe. In the kitchen: Chinese cabbage develops a heavy leaf mass. Cut the heads preferably close to the ground and pluck off all loose outer leaves. The cabbage can be eaten raw, as well as cooked. It has a mild aromatic taste that doesn’t come with the intense cabbage flavour. Chinese cabbage is widely used in recipes of the Asian cuisine. It can be nicely combined in salads with fruits like apples, oranges or peaches, or with vegetables like tomatoes, capsicum and cucumbers. It goes also very well with hearty ingredients like diced ham and boiled eggs. If you want to use Chinese cabbage as a vegetable, it is best cooked in a wok or added to soups and stews. However, about 8 to 10 minutes cooking time will be sufficient for the cabbage.
