Colostrum is rich in antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, that protect the young calf from disease until its immune system begins to function. A well-managed colostrum feeding program is an important factor in the health of newborn calves. The PortaCheck IgGCheck passive transfer test is a rapid on-farm tool for the qualitative determination of immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration in anti-coagulated whole blood. Calves that have an IgG level over 1,000 mg/dL are healthier, considered to have successful passive transfer, and are more likely to survive.
